Goodbye Robot: Voice Output of Finest Quality

The new Personal Translator 2008 uses the new TTS technology (TTS = text-to-speech) for voice output, a remarkably natural-sounding synthetic speech made possible by the new signal synthesis method.

Below you will find English, German and French samples. For comparison, the same text is read out with the IBM voice output still used in Personal Translator 2004.

English text version 1:

Famous stars smoke cigars in cars and bars!

That fat cat sat on a rat. Now it's flat as a mat!
Mike likes bikes with spikes to ride on ice.
The clever never ever say "Never ever!"
If there's a delay, they pay to stay another day.
They dare to stare at fair hair because it's rare there.
If the stick isn't thick, you'll split it when you hit it.
Don't freeze the cheese, please, Louise!
It's clear the beer is dear here!
The cook shook when he took a look at the cook book.
Whose two new blue shoes did Sue lose?
Bert wasn't hurt but got dirt on his shirt.

English text version 2:

Sugar and Spice and Biochemistry

Several big food and beverage companies are looking at a new ingredient in the battle for health-conscious consumers: a chemical that tricks the taste buds into sensing sugar or salt even when it is not there.

Kraft Foods, Nestlé, Coca-Cola and Campbell Soup are all working with a biotechnology company called Senomyx, which has developed several chemicals, most of which do not have any flavor of their own but instead work by activating or blocking receptors in the mouth that are responsible for taste. They can enhance or replicate the taste of sugar, salt and monosodium glutamate, or MSG, in foods.
